17 year old amateur boxer named Eddie Bilbey from Ripley, Derbyshire, has died following a boxing contest.
The bout
took place at the Pot Mill Centre in South Normanton, Derbyshire (Friday 10
PM).
Bilbey was
taken to the hospital after collapsing during the bout. The doctors from King’s
Mill Hospital fought to save the boxers life, but they weren’t able to do so.
The police,
though are not doubtful about the death, are appealing to some witnesses that
might help in solving the case.
"We
were called to the Post Mill Centre at South Normanton at 10.17pm yesterday
(Friday March 24) after the youth had collapsed in the ring," At this
stage there don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding this
death but if you were at the tournament and have any footage of the bout or
information that might help, please contact Detective Sergeant Debbie Yoxall on
101, quoting incident number 1162 of March 24," - A Derbyshire Police spokesman told The Nottingham Post.
Eddie Bilbey
was revealed to be fighting against familiar opponent, namely Tyler Rivers (in an
East Midlands Youth Welterweight). Both amateur boxers were reportedly in good
health and wearing proper boxing gears during the match.
Mr. Mike
Shinfield, stepfather of Eddie and who owns Elite Boxing Academy where he
trains told BBC Radio Derby that his son is in proper condition and doesn’t
have any health issues,.
Tyler River’s
coach, Craig Perkins from Earl Shilton Amateur Boxing Club said he never seen
anyone dies from boxing.
“Eddie
came over and shook both coaches’ hands” "When the referee went to raise
our lad's hand, Eddie just stumbled forward.” "I have been in boxing 35
years and never seen anyone die." – Craig

The Board of England Boxing, the sports governing body delivered
a testimonial saying the incident is being addressed.
"We
are extremely saddened... and would like to express our sincere condolences to
the family and friends of the person involved in this terrible and shocking
incident.”
"We
are also asking all of the England Boxing coaches, officials and volunteers
that were present on the night to co-operate with the police investigation and
assist the authorities in any way they can.”
"We
will be providing support to people that have been affected by this terrible
news."
The caused of death still unknown at this moment. The
Results of medical examination will be carried out by next couple of days.
