The IBF,
IBO, WBA and WBC middleweight title holder Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (37-0 33
KOs) will take some time off from the ring and won’t be fighting on June.
It was
reported last month that Team Golovkin plans to stage a June contest in
Kazakhstan against WBO middleweight champion Billy Saunders. But things didn’t
goes as predicted.
Tom Loeffler
of K2 Promotions who handles “Triple G” told the press that Gennady will not
return in the ring until at least on September.
"Gennady
is not going fight in June," "It was a quick turnaround after the
Jacobs fight and we would have liked to have done a fight with Billy Joe
Saunders but it was just too quick of a turnaround. So we'll see now when
Gennady is ready to fight what the biggest opportunities are." - Tom Loeffler
Per Tom
Loeffler, Golovkin’s body hasn’t fully recovered yet from his full 12 rounds
clash against Daniel Jacobs at the New York’s Madison Square Garden (first time
on his career).
"Gennady would
have had to be in training two weeks ago already but he went 12 hard rounds
with Jacobs. There was also a question on the date. Saunders' promoter] Frank
[Warren] wanted to move the date up a week. He wanted to go earlier in June.
Bottom line is Gennady won't fight in June. They still are anxious to have him
[in Kazakhstan]. They want him to be there and Gennady wanted to fight over
there but it would have been too quick of a turnaround. It was 12 hard rounds
(with Jacobs)." - Tom Loeffler
It’s
a great idea not to gamble Golvokin’s “unhealthy” body for clash against Billy Saunders.
There’s also a high chance of it derailing a potential September showdown
between him (Golovkin) and the winner of Canelo-Chavez Jr. So it’s wise to
seat, relax and wait for a greater opportunity.
Obviously,
that’s their priority. A massive title clash this coming September against the
Cinco de Mayo winner. This one makes more sense than fighting Billy Saunders
and to gain nothing.
It’s
going to be an electrifying match and people will surely buy it. Fans all over
the world are waiting for it to come. There’s no way that they could get less than
a million pay-per-view buys by doing this fight.
Tom
said that they are open to make a deal and to fight whoever wins on May 6th.
"We'll see what
happens. If Chavez wins we'd love to have a Chavez fight also," "If Canelo
wins that would be the priority. I'm still in contact with Golden Boy. I speak
to (Golden Boy president) Eric Gomez probably like twice a week. We'll see what
happens on May 6 and see if we can make a deal." - Tom Loeffler
