Keith Thurman holds 147 pound WBC and WBA welterweight belts |
Keith Thurman improves his
professional boxing record to 28-0 (22 Kos) after awarding a split decision
over Philly’s Danny Garcia 33-1 (19 Kos).
Thurman now holds WBA and WBC 147
pound belts.
Judges John McKaie and Joseph Pasquale
scored 116-112 and 115-113 for Thurman. Judge Kevin Morgan had it 115-114 for
Garcia.
“The judges are judges,”
“I thought I out-boxed him. I thought it was a clear victory, but Danny came to
fight. I knew when it was split decision — I knew it had to go to me.” – Keith Thurman
It wasn’t an
action-packed bout as anticipated by boxing fans around the world.
But, Thurman came smart to outbox
Garcia in early rounds.
Many were surprised by Thurman’s game
plan.
In mid rounds he had a lot of good
runs but wasn’t able to finish Garcia in a stylish way.
Garcia was clearly the aggressor all
throughout the fight. He want’s to engage. He wants to hit Thurman one time.
But Thurman never engaged. Keith just
danced in all four corners of the ring and walked away from the action.
“I was not giving the
fight away,” “I felt like we had a nice lead, we could cool down. I felt like
we were controlling the 3-minute intervals in each and every round.” – Keith Thruman
After the Saturday night bout,
Thurman in post fight dialogue shows interest in facing the winner of Kell
Brook – Errol Spence Jr.
Meanwhile, in a separate interview,
Garcia wants a rematch to reclaim the belts he had lost to Thruman.
The Thurman-Garcia had a total gate
attendance of 16,533 which is the highest-attended boxing event in Barclays
Center short history.
