UFC 214: Daniel Cormier grieves second loss of his career to his greatest rival Jon Jones

Former light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier grieves second loss of his career to his greatest rival Jon Jones on the main event of UFC 214.

Clearly, Cormier (38) was very upset about the outcome of the fight. Losing via knockout wasn’t on his mind and it’s not part of his plan. In fact, he’s looking to score a win on their second meeting to tie up their standing and prepare for their future trilogy.

Jones was victorious (via decision) when the two had first met on UFC 182 back in January 2015.

But, for Cormier, it’s all over. That dream won’t transpire into reality. He got beaten up by one of the greatest MMA fighter in history. Jones was too large and too smart for him.

The Rochester resident, Jon Jones, subjugated Daniel Cormier. Knowing how dangerous DC is in close gap, he went smart and cast-off his advantages to beat Cormier.  Based on total strikes computation, Jones landed 95/165 (58%).

Cormier’s game plan didn’t worked-out. For him to win, he must take Jones to the ground or shoot him with a vigorous overhand right hook. But because of Jones’ size advantage, he had hard time performing it. He couldn’t land any big shot to put Jones in trouble or taken the returning champ into the ground.

Daniel Cormier registered only 60 of 142 (42%) of total strikes and 0 take-downs.

From the very first round, DC was comfortable in putting pressure to Jones. But In exchange of doing that, he received some series of oblique kicks, elbows and knees from long armed Jones.

And when the third round came, a well-timed head kick changed everything and Cormier wasn’t expecting that airstrike to come in.

Jones knew that DC was out after his kick landed. And for the first time, DC went into the ground and got pounded.

The fight ended at round 3 1:57.

Cormier was very emotional during the post-fight interview. He couldn’t say anything about the fight. He was still out and couldn’t believe about what was just happened.

After his devastating loss to Jones, his future is undefined.

Daniel Cormier might take a long off out of the octagon. He might opt not to be part of any kind of shows and stay behind the cameras. The former light heavyweight champ needs to take a long rest and be with his family.

He will surely be back but not very soon.

From his last statement after Saturday’s event, DC finally congratulated Jon Jones.

Daniel Cormier’s statement posted on his Instagram:

“First off, thank you all for the kind words. I have felt the support. Congratulations to Jon jones and his team. They did a phenomenal job and got the victory. Also, to Big john McCarthy. I would like to apologize for acting up with you. I am thankful for the time you gave me to try and defend myself and stay in the fight. You are the best in the business for a reason.
