Michael Bisping claims that he’ll be facing George St-Pierre at UFC 217 at the Madison Square Garden
According
to the 185 pundit Michael Bisping (30-7), his next opponent has already been
named, and that is the former welterweight champion George St-Pierre (25-2).
Bisping revealed the news during his short interview with UFC
Tonight
"This
is actually the third time I've been offered this fight, so the ships sailed
twice, on this occasion, the third occasion, it set off sailing but did a
U-turn and pulled up at New York City.”
He also added that their middleweight bout (UFC 217) is
official and will be going down this coming November at the Madison Square
Garden in New York.
"I've
got a chirpy little Englishman who's going to fight Georges St-Pierre, Madison
Square Garden, Nov. 4. It is official. Put it in your diaries. Do not miss it.
We're taking over."
Many
were expecting that Michael Bisping will take on Robert Whitaker (19-4) next
but because Robert is dealing with his knee injury, the fight was called off. Robert
Whitaker will now instead be fighting the winner of Bisping-St-Pierre by early next
year.
George
St-Pierre (defended his welterweight belt for nine consecutive fights) retired
from the sport due to some personal issues as he claimed. The Canadian Mix
Martial Artist hasn’t fought since 2013.
UFC’s
initial plan was to put GSP in the que for the winner of welterweight match
between Woodley-Maia during UFC 214 in California. But because of the poor
outcome of the fight (on being not so competitive and least thrown trades in
history), the Organization shifted its gears and decided not to go through with
it.
Many
weren’t get entertained by that fight including the UFC president Dana White
“Listen,
when you break a record for the least punches ever thrown in a five-round title
fight, and you beat it, by I think it was like 130 [strikes] and these guys
threw 60 or something like that, I think that sums it up,”
White confirmed to Brett Okamoto
(ESPN) that Woodley’s performance affected the GSP fight.
“Absolutely……Good
things for Bisping” – Dana
White
Back to Michael Bisping and George St-Pierre
middleweight title contest, the UFC hasn’t
officially announced it yet, but per Dana White,
“It’s 100% on!”
