The San Antonio Spurs management announced a heartbreaking news
early Wednesday that Gregg Popovich’s wife, Erin Popovich (67), who had been
battling illness for an extended period, has died.
"We mourn the loss of Erin," "She was a
strong, wonderful, kind, intelligent woman who provided love, support and humor
to all of us." - Spurs GM R.C. Buford
Gregg and Erin are married for over four
decades with two children Jill and Mickey.
Erin, a native of Colorado Spring, met Gregg
when Gregg was working as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy
(1973-1979).
Gregg Popovich (69), who is in his 22nd
NBA season (been with Spurs since 1996), ran Wednesday team practice but uncertain if he will be leading The
Spurs on Thursday night to host the Golden State Warriors. If not, Spurs assistant
coach Etore Messina will likely take
position.
Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant of Golden State Warriors issued a
statement after learning the passing of Erin Popovich
"I just want Pop to know that the whole NBA family is
supporting him and got his back through it all," Durant said. "It's
bigger than the game. It's bigger than winning and losing. It's about the
brotherhood we built as NBA players and everybody in the NBA family. I feel so
bad for Pop and his family. That's just tough to hear about." – Kevin Durant
"I can't imagine what Coach Popovich is going through, but I am lifting up prayers you and your family." - Stephen Curry
